The Frizz Fight: Good Frizz vs Bad Frizz

The Frizz Fight: Good Frizz vs Bad Frizz

Years ago there was an ad on the TV about Chia Pets. These pets are American styled terracotta figurines used to sprout chia, where the chia sprouts grow within a couple of weeks to resemble the animal's fur or hair. Now, I dare you to go google what they look like! That is exactly how frizzy hair is, big and puffy. Frizzy hair is a common issue for people with curly or wavy hair, and can be caused by a variety of factors.

Frizzy hair can be a nuisance for people with curly or wavy hair, but there are several steps one can take to reduce the appearance of frizz. Hair frizz is primarily caused by the disruption of the natural moisture balance in the hair strands, which can be due to humidity, over-shampooing, heat styling tools or lifestyle choices such as smoking. The lack of moisture on the scalp causes it to become dry and brittle which results in an uneven surface making it difficult for individual hair strands to lay flat. As a result, they expand outward creating what is usually referred to as “frizz”.

Thing is, we have good frizz and bad frizz. Bad frizz is an unruly condition of the hair that results in straggly, wild-looking locks. Furthermore, when bad frizz occurs, it can lead to tangles due to the unruly nature of the hair which makes it difficult to brush and style properly. This can further exacerbate existing problems such as split ends or damaged strands as they’ll become more tangled and frazzled than before. Good frizz is a soft, manageable texture that adds volume to your hair. Unlike bad frizz which appears unruly and wild, good frizz is more controlled with a slight curl or wave that gives the hair a bouncy look. It is usually caused by humidity in the air or natural oils produced by your scalp, and it can make fine hair look fuller and thicker while adding volume to other types of strands as well.

In addition to dryness and brittle strands, other factors that contribute to frizzy hair include using products with too many harsh chemicals like sulfates or parabens; using hot water when shampooing; using a coarse towel to towel dry; going outside with wet hair; using too much product; not brushing regularly; not getting enough trims; and not conditioning correctly. Don’t get me wrong, there is good frizz and bad frizz and we will discuss this further. However, to combat this problem and make your locks look more presentable, there are a few solutions you can try.

Moisturizing Hair

One solution is moisturizing your hair regularly with natural oils like castor oil, coconut oil or olive oil which will help nourish your scalp and keep it hydrated.

Deep Conditioning

In addition to moisturizing your hair you should use a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week and avoid applying too many chemical-laden products on your hair. It is best to opt for lukewarm water instead when washing your hair as well.

Heat Styling

Heat styling tools should be used sparingly as these can further exacerbate the issue of frizzy hair if used excessively.

Hairstyles to avoid

You should also consider avoiding tight hairstyles that pull on your roots as this can cause further damage leading to increased frizziness.

Proper hair tools

Last but not least, invest in good quality brushes and combs that are free from snags – these will help maintain smooth locks while minimizing any potential damage caused by brushing or combing your hair too harshly.

Hair trims

Finally, getting regular trims every 6-8 weeks can help prevent frayed ends which often lead to more tangles and an unkempt look.

In addition, lifestyle habits can also affect the amount of frizz present in your hair. Smoking is known to cause dehydration in the scalp leading to increased frizziness, so avoiding cigarettes may be beneficial if you want to get rid of unruly frizz. These things can all result in increased frizziness and make it harder to maintain sleek locks. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats can help nourish your scalp from within which will result in healthier locks with less breakage and tangles; this will then give you natural looking frizz that isn’t unruly or wild.

Furthermore, using the right products can play an important role when it comes to achieving good frizz. Opting for lightweight shampoos and conditioners without any harsh sulfates or parabens will help keep them from stripping away too many natural oils from your scalp which leads to dryness and irritation; instead you should use gentler formulas that are formulated for your specific hair type.

Finally, opting for haircuts that embrace your curls rather than fighting against them can further help enhance the look of good frizz. Layered cuts help provide more body and movement while reducing bulkiness which makes them ideal for curly and wavy manes; layering around the crown area specifically helps give extra volume without making it appear too heavy-handed.

Overall, taking care of your hair properly is key when it comes to reducing unwanted frizz. Properly conditioning and moisturizing your strands regularly will go a long way in giving you sleek and shiny locks that look healthy and beautiful.
